Anne Waldman
(New York, Video)

⇒ Focus Jack Kerouac School Of Disembodied Poetics (JKS)

The legendary poet, performer, activist, and versatile scholar has been a defining force in experimental outrider poetics for over five decades, rooted in the traditions of the Beat, New York School, and Black Mountain movements, and a pioneer as a feminist and cultural activist.

In 2026, Anne performed as a poet at the Venice Biennale, including as part of the Poet’s Caravan at the opening of the festival. The author of more than 60 books, including the classic Fast Speaking Woman, the monumental Iovis Trilogy, and most recently Mesopotopia, her work encompasses epics, essays, performance, opera, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

She co-founded the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church and, together with Allen Ginsberg and Diane di Prima, the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. An original field researcher of consciousness, she explores radical shifts in language and awareness in order to create new structures of attention.

Anne has long been supporting Schamrock, including appearances and workshops at the 2018 festival and a video greeting for the 2024 festival. In addition, the Schamrock film festival Female Presence screened the documentary Outrider - A Film About Poet And Performer Anne Waldman as its German premiere, in the presence of Anne, the director Alystyre Julian, and the producer Sarah Riggs.

Her work is prophetic, energetic, passionate, and powerful.

Scallop Song

I wore a garland of the briar that put me now in awe
I wore a garland of the brain that was whole
It commanded me, done babbling
And I no more blabbed, spare no lie
Tell womanhood she shake off pity
Tell the man to give up tumult for the while
To wonder at the sight of baby's beauty
Ne let the monsters fray us with things that not be
From a high tower poem issuing
Everything run along in creation till I end the song
Ne none fit for so wild beasts
Ne none so joyous, ne none no give no lie
Tell old woes to leave off here:
I sing this into a scallop shell with face of a pearl
& leave all sorrow bye & bye.

The Lie

Art begins with a lie
The separation is you plus me plus what we make
Look into lightbulb, blink, sun's in your eye

I want a rare sky
vantage point free from misconception
Art begins with a lie

Nothing to lose, spontaneous rise
of reflection, paint the picture
of a lightbulb, or eye the sun

How to fuel the world, then die
Distance yourself from artfulness
How? Art begins with a lie

The audience wants to cry
when the actors are real & passionate
Look into footlight, then feed back to eye

You fluctuate in an artful body
You try to imitate the world's glory
Art begins with a lie
That's the story, sharp speck in the eye.

Attenuate the Loss and Find
For Adrienne Rich

[Our burden to carry as she did
shift the weight of song, heft and gnosis
“body poetics”
as a total event
her fullness rare in the amnesiac Kulchur
awake, awareness & urgency when poetry serves]

name appears
everywhere and in dream
body armor removed

what now, legacy, archivum
we female archons preserve of
intensity a durance a hand you recognize
(sounds sound)
assurance as lives on

drank of that
drank of this
almost suffocated, then drowned
downed but never

what only she could only know
as herself living in the brute time

speak of a syntax of rendition?
the politics of Empire chip away
as poetry attests, give it up

curve of a water-starved globe
to follow and be following?

racism, sexism, struggle

everything in intense grasp of
consciousness — cut in crystal observation
for her rapid and perched intellectus
privacy opens to vibrant light

this is stuff of Eros, of empathy
passionate edge of Adrienne
the American Skeptic

I feel you consociational in this light
a term of anthropology, to study
intersections in the annals we share

intergenerational, interspecies, interlanguage

move in parallelograms

getting it right as she did
