Way to Help the World Wake Up to Itself.
Schamrock welcomes a delegation from the Summer Writing Program and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in 2026. We present the legendary poetry school, founded 52 years ago in Boulder, Colorado. The JKS is part of Naropa University, a Buddhist-inspired university in Boulder.
It grew out of the first Summer Writing Program in 1974, which drew more than 1,300 students to Boulder and turned the small town in the Rocky Mountains into a center for learning, discovery, and the development of new perspectives: Poetry as a Way to Help the World Wake Up to Itself.
Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, John Cage, Amiri Baraka, and other great thinkers of the time came to read from their work, teach poetry courses, and exchange ideas with students from across the country. The Jack Kerouac School and the three-week Summer Writing Program are committed to social change and see themselves as pioneers of an experimental writing that deliberately disregards genre boundaries. Since its beginnings, the SWP has aimed to fundamentally rethink the act of creative writing.
The Summer Writing Program is open to everyone and also serves as the third semester for students of the Jack Kerouac School. The palpable enthusiasm of that first summer has been preserved in every Summer Writing Program since.
As poet and SWP faculty member CAConrad said: I leave this place filled with insights that change my life.
