The International Schamrock Festival of Women Poets has long since become an indispensable part of Munich’s cultural calendar. Over eight editions, it has grown into a cultural beacon, for the state capital, for Bavaria as a land of literature, and for poetry lovers from all over the world. Poetry here is far more than aesthetic expression: it makes the unheard audible, sharpens our awareness of social change and opens up new spaces for thought. In turbulent times especially, we need these artistic voices: sensitive, intelligent and unifying.

Under the motto Conference of the Birds II, this year Schamrock brings together more than 50 poets, musicians and artists from over 20 countries, and impressively demonstrates how powerful, polyphonic and contemporary women’s poetry is today. The fact that Schamrock is the world’s first and, to this day, only international festival for women poets underlines its special significance. Generations, cultures and languages meet here.

And it is here that new perspectives, artistic alliances and a lively dialogue across borders emerge. This is precisely the great strength of the festival: it combines artistic excellence with social relevance and sends a strong signal for the visibility of women in the international literary scene. The Free State of Bavaria is therefore pleased to stand by this unique platform for poetry, performance and interdisciplinary art as a reliable partner.

I thank all contributors, organisers, partner institutions and supporters who make this extraordinary cultural event possible. Special thanks go to Augusta Laar, whose visionary power, passion and perseverance have shaped the festival for years. To the audience, I wish inspiring discoveries, enriching encounters and many moments in which the power of poetry continues to resonate.

anregende Begegnungen.

For Munich, the Schamrock Festival has long been more than just an item in the cultural calendar. It is a flagship event that shows how cosmopolitan and internationally connected the city’s cultural life is. It creates a network of women that spans generations and borders, and it remains the world’s first festival for women poets, something the state capital is proud of.

The festival provides space for international luminaries such as Anne Waldman, Monika Rinck, Anja Utler and Barbi Marković, and brings them together with Munich poets and international new discoveries. The programme again includes events with current and former fellows of the Villa Walberta, the City of Munich’s artists’ residence on Lake Starnberg, as well as collaborations and translation projects. In the series meine drei lyrischen ichs (my three lyrical selves), held in cooperation with the Haidhauser Literaturbüro, poets from Munich and Bavaria are given a visible platform. The result is a dialogue between equals in a varied and exciting programme.

Each edition of the biennial festival offers special formats and new areas of focus. For its 8th edition, workshops give young people the opportunity to discover poetry in a playful way and to step up to the microphone themselves.

Over the years, the festival has developed into a platform for interdisciplinary art with a socio-political awareness, as its motto indicates: Conference of the Birds II – Poetry as a Response to Global Crises (Ukraine, the Middle East). It connects women poets across national and linguistic borders.

My thanks go to the festival’s ever-inspiring creator, the artist and cultural practitioner Augusta Laar, recipient of the City of Munich’s 2021 Anita Augspurg Prize, to co-organiser Kalle Laar, and to all contributors, organisers, partner institutions and other supporters of the festival.

I wish the International Schamrock Festival 2026 many enthusiastic visitors, exciting moments and stimulating encounters.
